For HENRYs (High Earnings, Not Rich Yet) and high-net-worth individuals (investable assets over $2 million), credit cards can be extremely rewarding with minimal effort.
At high incomes and high net worth, time is usually your limiting factor, rather than trying to extract the maximum value from a credit card rewards system or a cash back program.
The principle of simplicity should usually guide you when it comes to selecting a credit card. Your time is far too valuable to be worrying about earning 3 cents vs 5 cents of points or cash back on a purchase at the grocery store.
Unless you have a strong desire to dive into travel hacking as a hobby, I highly recommend picking just 1 or 2 cash back and travel rewards cards and focusing on only 1 or 2 travel rewards programs.
By concentrating your spending in 1 or 2 credit card travel rewards ecosystems, you can ensure that you receive a large portion of your natural, everyday spending back in the form of flights, hotels, and resort stays.
Personally, I enjoy travel hacking and using points and miles to secure ultra-long haul $10,000 first class flights. But for many families and individuals, there is simply no time to become a travel hacking expert.
That’s when using a simple cash back card for all purchases or a simple travel rewards card.
By switching to just 1 or 2 carefully selected card, you can usually capture 60% of the value of credit card rewards system. By using 3 or 4 cards and focusing on just 1 or 2 credit card rewards system, you can capture 80-90% of the value of credit cards while keeping your time investment to an absolute minimum.
Remember to set up auto payment on your card as soon as you activate the card online. That way you can ensure you will never miss a payment accidently.
